Making-of notes

Notes on what I think about while making things, and what I fix after release.

Getting Iro Battle ready to launch

Iro Battle is a game where hex colors turn into emoji and fight. Here is what I reviewed before launch, with the players in mind.

I pictured six players and played it through their eyes

A sixth grader, an office worker on the commute, a designer who loves color palettes, a player who digs deep into games, a university student in an English-speaking country, and a friend who rarely plays games. The idea of colors becoming emoji seemed to land, but two things were weak: a reason to come back every day, and a moment of surprise in the very first battle.

I added the Daily Color and a guided first battle

The Daily Color gives everyone the same starting color, and you can share your result as a row of colored squares. New players no longer have to read the help screens first. Instead, the first battle walks them through Attack, Mix, Defend and Skill one at a time.

Next, I will tune it based on how it is played

The game counts things like where players stop and which foes beat them most. After launch, I will use those numbers to adjust the balance and record the changes here. The Privacy Policy explains what is counted.
